On the map the French department of “Les Landes” is like a trapezium with the broad line boardering 110 kilometres of beach on the Atlantic coast. A sand dune of four to eight kilometres broad, separates the lowlands of the Landes from the Atlantic Ocean. From the famous sand dune of Pilat in the North to the esturay of the Adour River this barrier of sand is only intertwined by rivers, creeks and currents from the sea which form big lakes inside the coastline, especially south of Mimizan.
If you come to Léon, you can explore the famous “courant d’Huchet”. This is a creek between the lake of Léon and the ocean which crosses a lush forest also called the “Amazonia of the Landes”. You can discover the creek of Huchet in a canoe or rowing boat or walk along 20 kilometres of marked trails. The lake of Léon is of peaceful, shallow water best for sailing beginners and other water sports as well as for swimming or just a refreshing bath in complete safety (supervised beach).

From the North to the South,surfing, body-boarding, golf, horseback riding, and cycling. Carefully prepared forest cycle paths follow either the coastline or allow you to penetrate further into the shady pine forest following traditional trails which in past times were used by “Resiners”, people who collected resin from the innumerable pine trees of the Aquitaine Region (the Landes are part of it).
