The “course landaise” – fighting art and tradition

In this part of France the encounter between man and beast is a game. No fighting, no killing but a kind of a skilful play in which brave men perform artistic figures while threatened by a wild cow originating from the same stock as Spanish fighting bulls. The main ploys in the “cours landaise” are feint attacks, tricky leaps, cunning strikes and guile. The local “torero” incites the cow until it attacks, and than he passes his wriggling body as close as possible along the cow’s torso. There are also so called “sauteurs”, a kind of jumping toreros, whose aim is to jump as artistically as possible over the attacking cow turning somersaults, performing “angels’ leaps” and similar. Like the real bull fighting the “course landaise” has its fans (“aficionados”) and long traditions. Dating back to the 12th century, these local “bull” fights are an inseparable part of traditional festivals, like the once in Dax and Mont-de-Marsan, or even in the most modest village.

Cycle paths

There are two types of cycle paths:
- Signposted and well maintained paths are suitable for all kind of bicycles. Usually these paths stretch North- South along the coastline or/and give access to the seaside.
- The mountain bike-paths have usually no signposts and are reserved for experienced bikers with suitable bikes. These tracks are forestry-roads or follow traditional trails which in history were used by “Resiners”, people of the forest who collected resin from the innumerable pine trees of the Aquitaine Region.

Golf in Moliets

Build by the architect Sir Robert Trent Jones in the 1980’s, the golf course of Moliets is situated in a unique setting of pine forests bordering the Atlantic Ocean and covers 350 hectares. Technically and strategically challenging this golf course has been nominated the best French golf course by British golf operators and is ranked 15th best European place in a list of the Golf World-journal. In 2007 and 2008 the golf course of Moliets has achieved rank 68 of the world’s best golf courses. You can choose to play on two different courses (9 and 18 holes) or sign up for a golf-instruction-course.

Surfing

The legend has it that surfing on Pacific islands was once a trial of virility for young warriors. It was not until the 20th century that surfing became a well known sport in California, Australia and South Africa.
If you want to indulge yourself in the passion of surfing in the Landes, we recommend that you take some surfing classes. The beaches in the Landes – although most of them are supervised – can be dangerous. Excellent knowledge of the littoral, good physical conditions and familiarization courses with local waves will make your surfing in the Landes a sustainable experience with long lasting excitement. There are 15 surf clubs of the “Federation Français de Surf” on different beaches. The surfing instructors in these clubs hold a state-diploma which recognises their practical competence and provide essential knowledge to ensure your surfing progresses while considering your safety and security. Knowledge of the Ocean, surf equipment and special techniques as well as surf history and culture, means nothing will be forgotten on your way to be a real Hawaiian like surf-pro.
